Designing a Menu Set Layout

To design a menu set layout, administrators will:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel - Administration Tools and Menu Admin.

  2. Select the Modify link for the Menu Set you wish to modify.

The following screen will appear:

The top half of the screen presents the layout mechanism for the menu. By default the screen will show a top level menu as the first options in the left hand pane. If you select any of the top level menus, the children menus will appear in the right hand pane. Administrators can select a menu item in the left or right hand windows and select edit to configure it. If the administrator selects a menu in the right hand pane, all the items in the right hand pane will shift to the left hand pane.

The configuration pane will only appear at the bottom half of the screen after selecting edit for a single item. The top of the left hand window will show a [..] options for the administrator to navigate back up to the parent menu items. Administrators can add new items in either window. By default a new item will be labeled New Item and will be configured to take no action when selected.

Administrators may move menu items up and down to place them in logical or alphabetical order depending on their desire. Organizing items by moving them up or down will happen with items in the left hand pane. Administrators can also copy menu items and then paste or move the item anywhere in the menu structure. If an administrator moves a menu item that has sub menu items under it, those items will follow the menu item to the new structure. When an item is moved, security to the menu item and sub menus will remain in tact. When a menu or menu structure is copied, the menu security is reset to allow everyone to see the menu structure. Security for each item accessible from the menu will still be applied.

Menu Designer Configuration View

The configuration pane will allow administrators to configure each menu item to respond with a certain action. To configure this, select an action from the Action drop down menu. Each action has a different set of available configuration features. Refer to the Menu Action List topic for more information on configuring each action. At this time, only the list of defined actions can be taken, custom actions cannot be developed or added.

The following points explain the common fields found in the configuration pane above:

  • Action - list of possible actions that can be assigned to the menu item

  • Displayed Text - text that will be displayed in the menu item. It should communicate to the user the function or intention of this menu item.

  • Left Icon Path - icon that can be displayed to the left of the menu item like a report icon.

  • Popup Window Width - width of a popup window if launching action into a new window

  • Popup Window Height - height of a popup window if launching action into a new window

  • Open in new window - for the majority of configurations this is unchecked so actions will be kept in same browser window. If selected, the action will be opened into a new window.

  • Hide Menus (in new window) - by default, the top level menu will be displayed in popup windows. If this option is selected the menus will be hidden. Under most circumstances if you are opening a new window we suggest checking this option so users will not be confused when they are in a newly launched window from the VisualVault application.

Some configuration panes may have additional fields to facilitate the configuration of each action. Refer to the Menu Actions topics for more information on these additional fields.

Once the menu item has been configured, Administrators need to select the update button to apply their changes.

Items cannot be moved from menu to menu, they need to be deleted and recreated in another menu.

Security for each menu item can be applied from the configuration pane as well. Menu items can be configured so that a groups of users can view the item. Refer to the Menu Security topic for more information.
